A major source for environmental impact of any dredging activity is the creation of a turbidity plume by soil particles that "escape" during the excavation, transport or disposal process. IMDC developped specific procedures to measure and monitor the dredging activities in order to limit the efforts to an affordable level. Of course these measurements have to be sufficient to allow the experts to evaluate the potential impacts of the dredging operation.
