This yearly prize is being given in honour of Professor Gustave Willems, President of PIANC from 1956 until his death in 1982.

Contestants for the prize are required to submit a paper on subjects in the fields of design, construction, improvement, maintenance of operation of inland and maritime waterways (rivers, estuaries, canals, port approaches), of inland and maritime ports and of coastal areas.

The purpose of De Paepe-Willems Award is to encourage young professionals to submit for presentation outstanding technical articles with respect to navigation and ports (inland and/or marine).

This year, the award goes to Boudewijn Decrop of IMDC for his paper based on his PhD research entitled “Towards a Better Prediction of Dredging Plumes: Numerical and Physical Modelling of the Near-Field Dispersion”.

His research is based on both physical modelling and CFD modelling of the water-sediment-air mixture released when Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers (TSHD) use an overflow shaft to release excess water from the hopper. The multi-phase CFD model takes into account the realistic shape of a TSHD, air bubble drag and propeller jets. The model was validated with laboratory data and with field data.

Boudewijn is the 4th Belgian winner, the former Belgian winners are: Professor Ph. Rigo (Liège - 1989), Professor P. Troch (Ghent - 2001) and Mr T. Gernay (post doc researcher Liège - 2010).

The base PHD document is also proposed for one of the Tractebel Innovation awards.

On June 19th, 2017, the prize will be solemnly remitted to Boudewijn at the PIANC Annual General Assembly meeting in Cairns, Australia. Subsequently, his paper will be published in the PIANC magazine.

Congratulations to Boudewijn Decrop!
